  • 2024 Marks 10th Anniversary of Landers Acquisition

    Ten years ago, David Luther received a phone call from a broker, Ben Hicks, asking if he would be interested in purchasing dealerships in Little Rock, Arkansas. Hicks, having never met David Luther, researched automotive companies that would be a good fit for his client and found Luther Automotive. David Luther visited Little Rock to see the dealerships and meet the Landers Family, this started their growing relationship. The visit went well, with both parties interested in moving forward. After months of growing the relationship and negotiations, the deal was finalized in July 2014. 

    Scott Landers continued to run the Landers dealerships after the merger. David Luther wanted him to stay on because he had invaluable knowledge of the area and had been successfully running it for his family. 

    “Scott was a huge asset. He and his team taught me a lot about different ways of doing business, and I think we were able to teach Scott and his team a lot too,” said Andy Gadient. 

    The initial acquisition came with two dealerships in Little Rock, Landers Toyota with Chris Chase as General Manager, and Landers Little Rock Chrysler, with Eric Scaife as GM. The remaining seven dealerships, Little Rock Kia, NWA Toyota, Chrysler and Chevrolet of Norman, Chevrolet Cadillac of Joplin, and Mazda of Lee’s Summit and Kansas City were all added in the next eight years. 

    The initial reaction to the merger was mixed. Not knowing much about Luther and our values, some were worried about consolidations or job cuts that usually come out of mergers. “It was really important to Scott that his employees were taken care of,” said Jared Neufer. “It was obvious that happened because we still have a lot of tenured employees to this day.” Neufer is currently the Vice President of Operations at Landers but was the General Sales Manager at Little Rock Toyota at the time of the merger. 

    “I am proud that so many people remain with us today. It speaks to their commitment to the Landers Team,” said David Luther.

    “I could tell that Scott was excited about the opportunities that he hoped would come from the merger. He spoke so very highly of David and the entire Luther Team that it became clear there was great potential in it,” said Oliver Sobik. Sobik was the Executive Assistant to Scott Landers during the merger and is now a Senior Compliance Auditor. 

    Luther considered changing the Landers name to Luther but decided against it for a variety of reasons. “The Landers name is very recognizable in Arkansas. They have a deep history in automotive and Luther is non-existent there. They have built a reputation as a place to go to buy a car, and to be taken care of,” said Gadient.

    As for continuing to grow the Landers business, Gadient said. “We always want to expand and grow.” Arkansas has a similar market to Minnesota, with multiple large automotive companies having a foothold, making it difficult to find potential dealerships, but not impossible.

  • Adam Dietz Announced as Genesis General Manager

    Dietz has worked in a variety of positions at Luther over his ten years here, most recently as the General Sales Manager at Brookdale Mazda Mitsubishi, as well as their Used Car and New Car Manager. Adam Kretsch, General Manager, invested in Dietz’s development and supported his growth by attending the Luther Leadership Academy in 2023.

    Dietz started as a detail and service runner at White Bear Acura Subaru, then moved into sales at an outside dealership. He returned to Luther as the Finance Manager at Hopkins Honda. He accredits a lot of who he is to Kyle Allison, the previous General Manager at Hopkins Honda, who retired at the end of 2023. “Kyle was awesome. He texted me right away to congratulate me on the GM position. He was one of the biggest supporters and believers in me, I would not be what I am today without him.”

    Not many General Managers can say they built a team from scratch and start in a brand-new building. “I have a unique opportunity to hire my own staff. It’s rare that anybody can start from zero to hire everybody. It’s fun, in a way, because you get to find the right people,” said Dietz. “The new building is going to be beautiful. Who doesn’t like brand-new buildings? It’s going to be gorgeous inside and outside, everything is top-notch.”

    The dealership is set to open in 2024 with a grand opening later on. “I look forward to having my team and watching everyone succeed and grow the business,” said Dietz. “This is a new brand so there will be some challenges with it but it’s an exciting opportunity to get to grow the business and the brand.”

  • Technical Training Center Host First Module Five Graduation

    The first class of Luther Technical Training Center students graduated from their fifth and final module this past June. Students completed 200 days of training over two years throughout all five modules. Modules covered suspension, steering, alignment, brakes, HVAC, engine mechanics and performance, electrical, and driveline. During his keynote speech, Director of LTTC, Mark Brantner shared anecdotes for each graduate. “I’m so proud to have been your instructor, mentor but better yet, your friend. You will always be my first graduating class,” said Brantner. Sean Westman, Technician at White Bear Acura Subaru, was selected as Valedictorian for having the highest GPA for all the modules completed. Students are graded on professionalism, textbook assignments, lab assignments, and assessments. Congratulations to all our Module Five graduates.

  • First Years Sales Associate in Best of the Best

    Benjamin Wollin, Sales Associate at the Used Car Company, made Luther’s Sales Best of the Best list for 2023 in his first full year of selling cars. Wollin started at the Used Car Company in October 2022 after working at a cheese factory in Le Sueur and as a District Manager for Papa Murphys. His great uncle continually told him to try sales, and it wasn’t until he passed that Wollin decided to give it a shot. 

    “I started off blind, I had no training. It was tough, but it was a learning opportunity,” said Wollin. “I would watch my fellow salespeople like a hawk. I just sat and stared at people, watching everything. I figured out what worked, and what didn’t. The biggest thing was experience, getting in front of as many people as I could.”

    After some management turnover and Jamison Rohrbeck, Director of Used Car Operations, joined, Wollin started to get better and better. “We just asked him to trust us, we told him we’re going to build processes that would help,” said Rohrbeck. “We didn’t ask him to just sell more cars, we told him we are going to teach you how to sell cars and how to move the guests through the process.” Rohrbeck continued pushing Wollin to get 15 car deals, then 20, and so on. Eventually, they realized he wasn’t far out of making the Best of the Best and that became Wollin’s new goal.

    “The number one thing is making the guest’s time a priority. People really appreciate that. I always make sure I have the keys to a car before telling them I do and find other options just in case something changes,” Wollin added. “Giving them the time of day and being patient can make a difference.” 

    “Ben’s story should tell every salesperson that the sky is the limit, and their future is up to them. Are they willing to come to work with a great attitude, give maximum effort and be willing to be mentored, taught, and trained?” Joe Ruhland, General Sales Manager, asked. “Then there’s no limit to what they can accomplish, we’re just limited by what’s in our heads.”

  • Luther Celebrates Tech Trac Graduates

    Luther launched the Tech Trac program six years ago to support the most dedicated technical college students with an ambition for a career in the automotive technician field. Luther celebrated the 15 students who graduated from their technical college at a Luncheon grad party where they could select their tools for their bonus. Congratulations graduates.

  • Luther Cadillac Wins 2023 Dealer of the Year

    Dealer of the year awards are given to 20 Cadillac dealerships every year, four for each region. Each dealership must meet a certain set of parameters to be considered. Parameters include sales volume, Certified Pre-Owned volume, accessory sales, customer retention, service and Customer Satisfaction Index. All parameters are calculated against each dealership’s objectives for the year and are then ranked against the other 580 Cadillac dealerships nationwide. If a dealership has high rankings in every category except one, they will not be considered because each category needs to hit a certain goal.

    Luther Cadillac was awarded Cadillac’s Dealer of the Year award for 2023. This is the first Dealer of the Year award for Luther Cadillac in the five years since Luther acquired the dealership. 

    Luther Cadillac started the year in their old building, then moved to the new Luther Cadillac in August of 2023. “Most of the work was done at the old location. It’s honestly been four years of winning back the customers that the previous owners had that left before Luther bought it,” said Feavel. After Luther Cadillac moved into their new building, they continued reaching out to old guests inviting them into the new store for a tour and a free alignment inspection. 

    “This achievement is evidence of your dedication, hard work, and outstanding leadership over the last year,” said Tom Kinney, General Director of Cadillac. “We are thrilled to work with Cadillac dealers like Luther Cadillac who demonstrate their commitment to our brand.”

    When a dealership wins dealer of the year, Cadillac provides a small allowance to throw a party or outing to celebrate. Feavel hosted a luncheon for the whole staff and invited Luther and Cadillac leadership. Cadillac’s central region director and his team came out, as well as David Luther and Andy Gadient. “The team at Luther Cadillac should be extremely proud of earning Dealer of the Year,” said Gadient. “It’s symbolic of all of their hard work and dedication to serving their guests.”

    “It’s a lot of hustles. Everyone just put their heads down and did what they had to do. I’m proud and hopeful that we will do it again this year,” Feavel concluded.

    For the last ten years, Luther has recognized the top sales associates. Individuals are determined by the total number of final sales from the previous year.   • RLT Packs 300 Backpacks for Massie’s Mobile Mission

    Massie’s Mobile Mission is a non-profit organization that is focused on ending homelessness. They have built out a program to help pe

    ople eventually reach home ownership. The organization is on the first step of the program by providing emergency aid and support. As they grow, they will continue moving up in their mission.

    Rudy Luther Toyota packed over 300 backpacks with a variety of essentials, including granola bars, water, and hygiene products to be given outto people suffering from homelessness in the Twin Cities area. RLT purchased the supplies and packed each backpack. From start to finish, it took the RLT team under 30 minutes to pack 300 bags. Later in the week, Massie’s Mobile Mission picked them up and distributed them in the area. 

    “Events like this are important because they resemble who we are. We’re not here to just sell cars, we’re giving back the time and money to the community when someone buys a car from us,” said Joseline Pacheco, BDC and Internet Sales Manager. “We care about people and just want to give back.”

  • Ambassador of the Year Toni Luetjen from Toyota NWA

    Luetjen is the Director of Marketing for Landers and is responsible for all business development activities in northwest Arkansas. She is an ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce for Rogers/Lowell, Arkansas, Bentonville, Arkansas, and Springdale, Arkansas.

    Luetjen was presented with Springdale’s Ambassador of the Year award at their annual meeting in front of 800 attendees. The Rogers Lowell Chamber honored her at their Board of Director Meeting.

    One ambassador is selected each year based on who attends the most events during the year. Luetjen earned the most points out of about 50 other ambassadors in each chamber. Ambassadors attend a variety of events, including ribbon cuttings, business events and groundbreaking events. Luetjen attends 250-300 of these events per year between three chambers.

    At these events, Luetjen will hand out her Landers business card to bring business back to her dealership. She started pairing up sales associates with the guests based on personalities or skills. A guest once brought their mother whose first language was Spanish, so Luetjen set them up with a bilingual Sales Associate. She has also implemented a program so Sales Associates immediately connect with the guests and find out their vehicle preferences to be more efficient. “This has proven to save everyone time and they love it!” said Luetjen.

    Luetjen’s favorite part about being an ambassador is learning what new businesses are coming to town. “I love to refer people to these businesses and help them get the word out that they are in town and what they have to offer!” said Luetjen. “When you help promote other businesses, it comes back to you tenfold.”
