  • Hudson Chevrolet Delivers 600 Donuts to Hudson Schools

    Scott Stiles, Sales Manager, organized the event. “Teachers are among the most important people in all communities and sometimes do not get the appreciation and respect they deserve,” said Stiles. “They are some of our children’s biggest influences and shape and mold them at an early age to be better people.” Todd Marcotte, Ricky Benitez, Matt Kennedy, William Sames, and Drew King, all Sales and Leasing Professionals, helped drop them off. Kennedy’s wife Jennifer and Benitez’s daughter Blair helped too.

    Stiles’ daughter attends River Crest Elementary School where he dropped off donuts. The entire school was in a meeting when he arrived. “I told them we just wanted to let them know how much we appreciate them and hope they have a great year. They cheered and I quickly ran the other way,” Stiles said. “Later that week was Meet the Teacher, where you drop off your supplies and meet your kid’s teacher for the year. Multiple teachers approached me and texted my wife to thank us for bringing them donuts.” 

    As for why they decided to do this, Stile just said “it’s the Luther way!  We support our communities, and our communities support us. After reading Unreasonable Hospitality and talking with our GM Tim Jubie, we have all been thinking of ways to serve our guests and community. This was one that I thought was important.”

  • Luther Paintless Dent Repair – Since 2001

    In an era where vehicle maintenance often means costly repairs and lengthy downtime, a revolutionary technique is gaining traction among car owners seeking quick and efficient solutions to cosmetic damage. Paintless dent repair (PDR), a method that eliminates dents without the need for repainting, is transforming how minor vehicle repairs are approached, offering a blend of cost-effectiveness and precision. 

    Luther Paintless Dent Repair was started in 2001, primarily to help the pre-owned departments recondition their inventories. As Luther added more and more dealerships, more PDR techs were added to keep up. Now, Luther PDR has six trained technicians with over 100 years of combined experience who repair thousands of vehicles yearly.

    Luther PDR recently had a guest who brought her vehicle to a competitor to have a large dent repaired and was told the dent was too severe to use PDR to repair it. She brought the vehicle to Luther Collision and Glass Plymouth for a body shop estimate. After looking at the dent, they determined that a Luther PDR tech could repair it. Justin Verdick, a PDR tech, repaired the dent in four hours and saved the guest $1,200. She also had her car back on the same day. 

    “Paintless dent repair not only saves money for our guests but also helps maintain the integrity of their vehicles,” said Lance Howard, Manager of PDR. “It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved.”

  • Road Scholar : The Extra Degree

    We often think the difference between winning and losing is so significant that the extra effort to win is too hard and not worth it. In the Summer 2024 Olympics, The US’ Noah Lyles won the 100-meter race to become the World’s Fastest Man. But he didn’t win by much. Noah Lyles ran 100 meters in 9.784 seconds, and Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson, who won silver, ran it in 9.789 seconds, just a five-thousandths of a second difference. This story would be very different had Lyles not pushed himself a bit more. 

    Think of it in another way…at211º, water is hot, at 212º, it boils. And with boiling water comes steam. And steam can power a locomotive. Sam Parker and Mac Anderson illustrate that one extra degree makes all the difference in their book 212 The Extra Degree: Extraordinary Results Begin with One Small Change.

    Incremental improvements, commitment to excellence, and your attitude or mindset are what The Extra Degree focuses on. Rather than trying to make big changes at once, start with small, consistent changes that will accumulate significant results. Wanting excellence in any area of your life will be more motivating to turn up the heat more. Success often comes down to your attitude and mindset. When you maintain a positive attitude and are willing to go the extra mile you can achieve extraordinary results.

    There are numerous examples of how small changes and extra effort can lead to significant achievements. In hospitality, businesses stand out with the basics, like nametags and friendliness. Once those small changes are mastered, you can continue building on them to create memorable guest experiences. When leaders who go the extra mile often inspire their team to do the same. Setting high standards and showing dedication can motivate others to exceed their own expectations.

  • Service Advisor Holds Perfect Promoter Score for 7 Months

    Mitch Rose, Service Advisor at Bloomington Acura Subaru, started at Luther in 2016 in an express service position and moved into a main shop spot later. A net promoter score is based on whether a guest will recommend you to friends and family. After any sales or service experience at Luther, guests are sent a survey to fill out.   

    While holding a perfect net promoter score for the first seven months of 2024, Rose also had the store’s top customer-paid hours per Repair Order at 3.3 hours. The higher the number means he is bringing in guests with bigger repair jobs. Rose credits his perfect score to never mentioning the survey at all to guests. “The last thing I say to guests is ‘the best way to help us if you feel like we did a good job, is just to recommend us to your family and friends,” said Rose. He has even done experiments to test if this is the reason for his success and instantly saw an impact on his scores.

    People have noticed other things Rose is doing to continue getting perfect promoter scores, including Service Manager John Reinan. “He always presents all the work the car needs and guests trust him, so they know what he is saying is real,” said Reinan. “They can’t always have thousands of dollars of repairs done at once so Mitch will help them triage the biggest issues. And guess what? They come back to him when they need the rest of it done.”

    Besides not mentioning the survey, Rose recommends to others to build rapport with every guest, even with standard oil changes. “Building that rapport is what makes a huge, huge difference as far as keeping people in the door and keeping people coming back,” said Rose.

  • Used Cars: Where Do They Come From

    When it comes to purchasing pre-owned vehicles for Luther Automotive, there are generally three preferred methods.

    Trade-Ins  

    Roughly half of our vehicle inventory comes from trade-ins. Why is this important? It creates a cycle. When a guest  trades their car in, it’s three transactions. The trade to your store, their new (or used) vehicle purchase, and the sale to the next guest.    

    Auto Auctions  

    There are 328 auto auctions in the United States alone. 311 physical locations, and 17 online versions that are 24/7 platforms for purchasing used vehicles. Auctions represent about 30% of our used vehicle inventory. 94% of these purchases are done online without having to be at a physical auction location. Once the purchase is complete, the vehicles are transported back to the dealership via truck and trailer.   

    WeBuy  

    Luther/Landers buys any car, regardless of condition, age, or what the guest owes. Some guests simply don’t need or want to purchase another vehicle. Any one of our locations, or our mobile We-Buy team can buy a vehicle from a guest. 15% of our pre-owned inventory is attributed to the WeBuy program.   

     

    About another 5% of the remaining pre-owned inventory is sourced through the Dealer Trade process which occurs when other dealerships or wholesalers contact us looking to bid and/or purchase a vehicle in our inventory.

  • Westside VW Foreman’s Animal Sanctuary

    Steve Davis, a shop foreman at Westside Volkswagen, owns and runs an animal sanctuary called RK Acres Sanctuary with his wife in Hallandale, Minnesota, 90 miles south of the Twin Cities. Davis started with Volkswagen in 2007.   

    How they started their sanctuary is an interesting story. “Somebody our neighbors knew asked their kid if they would take a goat off their hands. The kid brought this live goat home and his dad immediately said no,” Davis said. “So, he came to me and asked if I wanted this goat. I said yes and Henry became our first resident.”

    Every other animal that has come to the Sanctuary has a similar story. Their two goats used to be pets and eventually the owners didn’t want them anymore, so the Davis’ took them in too.

    Oatie, their pig, was believed to be on her way from a weaning facility to a pig farm, because she was found on the side of the road. The people that found her looked up animal sanctuaries and found PK Acres Sanctuary.   

    “Oatie got her name because her jaw was broken and we had to feed her oatmeal for two months and so that’s when we just started calling her oatmeal,” Davis said. 

    Finally, all their horses come from kill pen auctions. There’s a group within the auction that tries to help find new homes for them. “Typically, we can try to make it a policy not to buy animals, but we have. There’s Facebook groups that want to donate. They’ll say, ‘I want to save a horse, but I live in the city.’ It’s almost like an adoption where people will give the money and we will take care of the horse,” Davis said. 

    Overall, they have seven horses, three goats, a pig and a bunch of chickens, ducks and dogs. They rescue dogs for Heading Home K9 Rescue, which they own as well. They hosted an event at Westside earlier this year. Nine puppies were up for adoption, and all had a home within the first hour of the two hour event.

    cue for a reason,” Davis added. “Our goal is to help the helpless but also educate people on how to do better.”

    As for future plans for RK Acres Sanctuary, Davis and Tasha have talked about having classes out on field trips where they can learn where their food comes from and interact with the animals.

    Davis concluded with “it’s a fun, fulfilling life!”

  • Road Scholar: How Heavy is a Glass of Water?

    A teacher once started her class by filling a drinking glass halfway up. She then asked the unexpected question to her students. “How heavy is this glass of water?” Students shouted out answers ranging from eight ounces to sixteen ounces. 

    She paused for a moment and replied, “the absolute weight of this glass doesn’t matter. It all depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute or two, it’s fairly light. If I hold it for an hour straight, its weight might make my arm ache a little. If I hold it for a day straight, my arm will likely cramp up and feel completely numb and paralyzed, forcing me to drop the glass to the floor. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it feels to me.”

    As the class nodded their heads in agreement, she continued, “your stresses and worries in life are very much like this glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and you begin to ache a little. Think about them all day long, and you will feel completely numb and paralyzed — incapable of doing anything else until you drop them.”

    This is a true analogy for many individuals who carry that glass of water every day and for years without setting it down because they don’t want to ask for help or show any weakness. While there’s nothing wrong with working hard and taking your share of responsibilities, you shouldn’t sacrifice your quality of life or jeopardize your mental health in the process.

    It’s important to remember that asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness. Actually, asking for help shows signs of strength, confidence, and resourcefulness. In a world where people expect problems to be solved fast, surrounding yourself with people who can help you in different situations is highly valuable.

     

    Ask for help from others when the weight of the glass becomes to heavy.
